After Dental Implants or Tooth Extractions
Wound Care & Bleeding - Do not touch, rinse, or spit on the surgical area for the first day. Mild bleeding or red saliva is normal for up to 24 hours. To help stop bleeding, gently bite on gauze or a moist tea bag for about 30 minutes. Call our office if bleeding is heavy or does not stop.
Pain Management
Start pain medications as local anesthetic wears off. Use over-the-counter Tylenol or Ibuprofen for moderate pain. Take prescribed pain medication as directed for severe pain. Avoid medications you are allergic to or have been instructed to avoid.
Swelling and Bruising
Swelling is normal and peaks 2-3 days after surgery. Apply ice packs continuously for the first 36 hours to reduce swelling. After 36 hours, use moist heat to help reduce swelling and bruising.
Diet and Hydration
Drink plenty of fluids; avoid hot drinks and foods on surgery day. Eat soft foods; gradually return to a normal diet as you heal. Avoid straws to prevent dislodging blood clots.
Additional After Surgery Care
Oral Hygiene
No rinsing for 24 hours post-surgery. From day two, rinse gently 5-6 times daily with warm salt water (1 tsp salt in a cup of warm water). Brush teeth gently, avoiding surgical sites initially.
Activity & Exercise
Limit physical activity after surgery. Avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours or until you feel ready. Stop exercising if you feel lightheaded, dizzy, or experience bleeding.
Other Tips
Use lip balm to prevent chapping. Temporary numbness is normal — be careful not to bite numb areas. Sutures are removed one week after surgery. Avoid dentures or prostheses immediately after surgery unless directed otherwise.
