Recognizing the Signs of Disease in the Mouth

The inside of your mouth is usually lined with smooth, pink tissue called mucosa. If you notice changes in color, texture, or feel, it may be a sign of a pathological condition, including oral cancer.

Early detection can be life-saving.

Watch for warning signs such as red or white patches, sores or ulcers that don’t heal, lumps or thickened areas in the mouth or neck, persistent hoarseness, or difficulty chewing or swallowing. These symptoms can appear on the lips, gums, tongue, cheeks, palate, face, or neck. Pain is not always present, so changes should be evaluated even if they are not uncomfortable.

Your Mouth Can Speak Volumes

Changes in your mouth are often one of the first signs of a deeper health issue. Early evaluation can make a difference.

Oral Cancer Self-Check: A Smart Habit
